RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A 23-year-old woman shot a man who was trying to rob her on a downtown Raleigh street in broad daylight Thursday, Raleigh police said.

At 3:30 p.m., Raleigh police responded to a shooting call near the intersection of Blount and Martin streets.

Raleigh police said Jonathan Tyrone Peace attempted to rob a 23-year-old woman while she was on Blount Street near City Market.

The woman pulled out a gun and shot Peace to stop the robbery, police said.

A witness called 911 to report the shooting.

“I am at the corner of Blount, South Blount and Wolfe…holy (expletive)! There were shots fired! There’s shots fired at the corner of Blount and Wolfe,” the caller said.

Peace was shot in the chest with the bullet exiting through his shoulder.

“Yes, someone has been shot. The victim is down on the sidewalk,” the caller said.

The 23-year-old woman remained on the scene until police arrived.

“The gun is in possession of someone working at Growler USA Microbrew. The shooter dropped the gun and then it was picked up by someone here in the store,” the caller said.

Peace was taken to WakeMed for treatment and will be transported to the Wake County Detention Center after he is released from the hospital.

He faces a charge of common law robbery.
