Firefighter’s wife dies after fire destroys Leland home

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Leland woman died from injuries she sustained in a fire that destroyed her home Thursday morning.

According to Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner, the fire occurred inside a mobile home at 155 Old Lanvale Road around 9:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found Kimberly Eggleston, inside the home.

Garner said Eggleston suffered severe burn injuries and was initially transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was later transferred to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill where she died a short time later.

Garner also confirmed the victim was the wife of Winnabow Volunteer Firefighter Edward Eggleston.

On Facebook, the Winnabow Volunteer Fire Department posted, “On behalf of Chief Mercer and the Winnabow Volunteer Fire Department we ask that you keep Winnabow Fire Firefighter Edward Eggleston in your thoughts and prayers. Edward lost his home and wife Kimberly in a tragic house fire this morning. The fire department will be taking up donations for Edward and his family.”

The Egglestons’ home was a complete loss and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
