Rocky Mount senior police officer dies in crash

ROCKY MOUNT, NC (WWAY) – A deadly collision claimed the life of a Rocky Mount police officer over the weekend.

The Rocky Mount government offices say the crash happened Saturday night at 10:35 p.m. The Rocky Mount Police Department received a call of a vehicle accident at 4112 South Church Street.

Patrol Units responded with the Sharpsburg Police Department to the scene. Once on scene of the accident, police determined that Officer Christopher Driver had succumbed to his injuries.

Officials say Officer Driver was in his patrol car traveling South on South Church Street when he collided with a Commercial Motor Vehicle in his travel lane.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol Recon Unit was called from Raleigh to investigate the fatal collision. At this time it is still under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Senior Police Officer Christopher Driver was hired by the Rocky Mount Police Department on February 5, 2013. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Police Officer on Aug. 26, 2017.

The police department issued the following statement, “The Rocky Mount Police Department is truly saddened by the loss of Officer Driver. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We ask everyone to please respect the privacy of Driver’s family during this time of bereavement.”
