YMCA urges safe swimming as community prepares to dive into summer

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Saturday will be the first full day of summer and people are already looking for places to stay cool like the beach or a community pool.

Lindsey Hays is the director of aquatic safety with the Nir Family YMCA

She recommends swimming with a buddy and never swimming alone.

If you are using a lifejacket, make sure it’s U.S. Coast Guard approved.

For weaker swimmers, if you are in the pool, stay in an area where you can stand.

Hays adds, it’s crucial to swim near a certified lifeguard.

“Make sure that you’re swimming in an area that’s with a certified lifeguard, that’s the most important thing to do. Make sure that you are swimming to the best ability that you have so don’t go somewhere where you know you cannot swim. Just being safe is the most important piece,” Hays said.

The YMCA offers swimming lessons for people of all ages. Next Thursday, June 26th, will be ‘The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson‘ event. This free community event will be held at various times and at multiple locations including Legion Stadium Pool and Robert Strange Pool.
