Man injured in early morning vehicle fire

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Early Saturday morning a tractor trailer caught fire leaving a man injured.
According to Whiteville Fire Chief David Yergeau, a tractor trailer was driving east on U.S. 74 around 2:45am and got in the median and hit the bridge that passes over U.S. 701. In the process, the truck caught fire and the cab and trailer both burned up.
The driver of the tractor trailer was injured and taken to Columbus Regional Healthcare System with second degree burns.
Multiple units responded to the fire including Whiteville Fire Department, Klondyke-Chadbourn Fire and Rescue, White Marsh-Welches Creek Fire Department, and Hallsboro department.
Chief Yergeau urges drivers to be patient as eastbound 74 is still backed up and partially closed. Clean-up is expected to be completed Saturday afternoon.
The investigation is still underway and the cause for how the driver got into the median is still unknown.
