Mother, infant killed after tree falls on Wilmington home
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say a mother and an infant were killed after a tree fell on a house on Mercer Avenue. The department says they are the first two deaths from Hurricane Florence in the Port City.
Earlier, the Wilmington Fire Department said it had taken one one person to New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a tree fell on the home around 11 a.m. WPD now says that was the child’s father.

WWAY’s Andrew James was at the scene and described the firefighters as “shaken up” by what they saw.
In Pender County emergency officials have also reported a death. They say a woman in Hampstead died after suffering a heart attack this morning and emergency crews could not reach her because of fallen trees.
