Team of the Week: West Brunswick Trojans

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY)–Brett Hickman knew coming into this season that the West Brunswick Trojans weren’t going to be ready to compete for a state championship, but he  expected them to work like they were.

The last time that the Trojans beat Laney High School in football was back in 2010, but last Friday night they made a statement taking down the Buccaneers at home 24-19.

“I looked at the career record and I think we were 3-16 against them all-time. Anytime you go across and play one of those schools from Wilmington and find a way to come out on top, it is big as you are trying to build a program,”said head coach Brett Hickman.

West Brunswick has had their backs against the wall since starting the season just 1-4, but it didn’t help they had to take almost a month off during Hurricane Florence. When you start a season like that, it can sometimes be tough to bounce back. That has not been the case for the Trojans this season on the grid iron.

“Honestly I feel like the intensity has rose up as we are trying to get in those playoffs. We just need to win the next few games to get into the playoffs and keep the season going”, said senior Jake Baylor.

The next step towards making the playoffs under first year head coach Brett Hickman is on Thursday night. West Brunswick will have a huge game on the road against their rivals South Brunswick, but they say at the end of the day it is just like every other game.

“You cant make it anymore then it is. It is a game between two football teams where a lot will be at stake. There is probably nothing more at stake then just talking about how important it is to each program to win this game,”said Hickman.

West Brunswick vs. South Brunswick is set for 7:00 P.M. on Thursday night in Southport.
