Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office issues warning after local woman scammed by fake pet ad

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning after a local woman fell victim to an online pet scam.
According to the sheriff’s office, the woman responded to an online ad promoting puppies for sale. She paid a deposit to “hold” one of the dogs, but the website disappeared overnight, along with her money. Authorities say the same scam website has since reappeared under a different name using the same photos.
Residents are being urged to remain cautious when buying or adopting pets online.
Tips to avoid online pet scams:
- Thoroughly research the breeder or seller.
- Avoid anyone unwilling to speak over the phone or on a video call.
- Request and verify references or customer reviews.
- Do not send money through unsecured payment apps like Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App unless they offer purchase protection.
“Scammers prey on people’s love for animals,” the sheriff’s office said. “Please share this warning to help protect others.”
