WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –The New Hanover County Board of Education is extending the contract of Superintendent Dr. Christopher Barnes through June 2029.

The decision was made during the Board’s July Agenda Review Meeting.

A statement from the district says Dr. Barnes, whose initial contract was approved on March 1, 2025, has demonstrated visionary leadership and a clear dedication to student achievement, educator support, and community engagement. Under his guidance, NHCS has embraced bold strategies to strengthen academic performance, elevate staff collaboration, and ensure every student is prepared for success in college, careers, or the military.
“We are building something special here in New Hanover County, and I am honored to continue this journey,” said Superintendent Dr. Chris Barnes. “This extension is not only a vote of confidence in our shared progress but also a promise to our students and staff that we will keep striving for excellence every day.”
“Dr. Barnes has shown exceptional leadership during a pivotal time for our district,” Board Chair Melissa Mason added. “His collaborative approach, strong leadership, and clear vision for academic success make him the right leader for NHCS. We’re excited to continue this partnership as we move forward together.”
