Leland art exhibit explores culture of Puerto Rico
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A new art exhibit is being shown in Leland this month celebrating the culture of Puerto Rico.
The exhibition at the Leland Cultural Arts Center is titled “Ecos De Boriken”—which is the original indigenous name for the island of Puerto Rico.
UNCW graduate and artist Andy Álvarez says the exhibition explores Puerto Rican culture, nature, and politics.
She says the works are a love letter to her home.
“It’s just a lot of emotion, a lot of memories. Like I love North Carolina, but I do miss living back home. So these are just echoes that are in me constantly,” Álvarez said. “I’m genuinely so grateful for people to come see my art and learn about Puerto Rico. I think that’s the most important thing to me.”
The exhibition will be on display at the Leland Cultural Arts Center on Magnolia Village Way until October 2.
