UNCW Student Government Association releases statement on threats, student safety

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The UNC Wilmington Student Government Association is speaking out following a series of recent incidents on campus, urging students to remain resilient and assuring them that their voices will be heard.
In a statement released Friday morning, SGA leaders said the actions that have transpired over the past week have been concerning and have left some students feeling unsafe.
“It disheartens us that our beautiful campus has become a place of threatened violence and that students do not feel safe here,” the statement read. “We can personally guarantee you that we will hold our administration accountable to ensure that our campus returns to the safe environment that we all know and love.”
The group emphasized that this is a time of uncertainty, but pledged to continue advocating for students until the campus community feels secure again.
Alongside the written statement, SGA offered direct resources and support to students.
“We hear you. As fellow students and your representatives, we recognize that now more than ever, your voices deserve to be heard,” the group said. “In the coming days, we’ll be organizing opportunities for you to share your concerns.”
Students needing additional support are encouraged to contact the UNCW Counseling Center at (910) 962-3746. The services are free and confidential.
SGA leaders reiterated their mission to serve as “the voice and vision of the student body” and promised to uphold that promise.
“We will not back down from advocating until we feel that it is safe for all students on our campus,” the statement concluded.
