SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — State and local leaders are responding after three people were killed and several others hurt in a mass shooting late Saturday night in Southport.

Authorities say shots were fired from a boat into a crowd at the American Fish Company around 9:30 p.m. Three people died and at least eight others were injured. A suspect, identified as Nigel Max Edge, 30, of Oak Island, was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder.

Governor Josh Stein said he was devastated to hear of the violence.

“I’m heartbroken by the shooting last night in Southport that tragically took three lives and injured others. Anna and I pray for their families and friends,” Stein said. “I have been in touch with state and local law enforcement, and the state will provide any support needed. Southport is a small but strong community. May we all come together to support them as they heal from this horrific shooting.”

Brunswick County Board of Commissioners Chairman Mike Forte said the county stands ready to support Southport as the community grieves.

“My fellow Brunswick County Commissioners and I want to express our heartfelt grief and sorrow on the shooting in Southport last night resulting in the death of three individuals and the injury of several others. Please keep those recovering and the loved ones of those lost in your hearts and prayers. We are also grateful for the quick and dedicated response of our local law enforcement and emergency medical personnel. There is a lot we still don’t know about this incident and a lot we may never understand,” Forte said. “I pray for healing and comfort to those who are feeling lost or fearful at this time, and for peace to the entire Southport community. The Board of Commissioners will support Southport’s leadership and residents in any way we can as we navigate this difficult time together.”

Rep. Charlie Miller, who has lived in Southport his entire life, also shared his condolences.

“I am devastated such an act of violence happened here,” Miller said. “I will continue to keep the victims and their families in my prayers. I appreciate our first responders, who every day put their lives on the line to protect our citizens.”

State and federal investigators, including the SBI and ATF, continue to work with Southport police on the case. Officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
