UNCW launches new reservation system for campus spirit rocks

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A new reservation system for the use of the UNCW spirit rocks will go into effect Monday at 8 a.m. At that time, the university will lift the temporary pause on use of the spirit rocks and designated freedom of expression spaces.
The Policy on Displays outlines the updated process for reserving the rocks. According to UNCW, the new system is meant to provide structure and consistency while still supporting freedom of expression.
Members of the UNCW community can reserve the rocks through the Campus Reservation System by signing in with their university credentials. From there, users can select “Create a Reservation” to access the spirit rock reservation template.
The new process also places limits on how long messages may remain. While students were previously asked as a courtesy to leave artwork in place for at least 24 hours, the new reservation system requires a 24-hour limit.
The designated freedom of expression spaces on campus will continue to be governed by the “Freedom of Expression by Non-University Sponsored Individuals or Groups” policy.
UNCW officials say the university supports freedom of expression but does not allow speech or activities that substantially disrupt campus operations or violate state or federal laws.
The university also encourages students, faculty, staff and the community to embrace the Seahawk Respect Compact, which promotes civility and mutual respect in campus interactions.
