Southport police chief addresses community after deadly mass shooting

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Southport Police Chief Todd Coring released a statement on Friday afternoon following Saturday night’s mass shooting at the American Fish Company, which left three people dead and six injured.
The chief began his remarks with condolences for the victims, their families, and the entire community.
“Our city is grieving, and I know that shock, sadness, and anger are weighing heavily on all of us,” he said. “First and foremost, my deepest condolences go out to the victims, their families, and all who were affected by this horrific act. We stand with you during this unimaginably difficult time.”
Chief Coring praised the quick response from officers who arrived on scene within minutes of the first 911 call, crediting their actions with saving lives and preventing further tragedy. He also commended citizens who stepped in to help.
“I am grateful for the acts of bravery witnessed by many civilians who rendered aid to the injured and helped to evacuate others from the scene,” he said. “In one of our darkest hours, we witnessed the very best in you.”
The investigation remains ongoing. Police say they are working with local, state and federal partners to determine the motive and gather all facts.
In the coming days and weeks, Southport residents can expect to see an increased police presence, especially around the Waterfront and Yacht Basin corridor, as additional officers from across Brunswick County assist Southport police.
“Our greatest long-term protection against violence is a strong relationship built on trust between law enforcement and the community,” Coring said.
He closed his statement by urging unity and resilience.
“This tragic event has shaken our city to its core, but it will not define us,” he said. “Healing will be a long process, but we will get through it by extending kindness and support to one another. We will honor the memories of those we lost by working toward a safer and unified community.”
