Hanover Kennel Club hosting annual AKC Dog Shows in Wilmington this weekend
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One of Wilmington’s oldest traditions is back at Legion Stadium this weekend as the Hanover Kennel Club hosts its 128th and 129th annual AKC dog shows.
Susan Hayes, a longtime club member, says this year’s show will bring together hundreds of dogs from across the country.
“We have about 424 dogs entered in the show, and of that, that’s 113 different types of dogs that will be there,” Hayes said.
The two-day event runs Saturday and Sunday, with judging starting at 9 a.m. each day. Spectators can attend for free, but organizers are asking visitors not to bring their own dogs.
“Fortunately, it is free to enter,” Hayes said. “We just ask people, do not bring your own dogs, really out of safety and concern for everyone that’s there.”
Hayes brought her own champion golden retriever, Callum, to the WWAY studio. She says Callum will be competing as a champion this weekend.
“Callum is a champion golden retriever. He’s three years old and just earned his championship last April,” Hayes said. “He’ll be competing this weekend in the show as a champion.”
Dogs will compete within their breeds and then advance through seven groups: sporting, hound, herding, terrier, non-sporting, working, and toy. Winners from each group will then compete for Best in Show.
Hayes says the Hanover Kennel Club has a long history in Wilmington, with roots stretching back more than eight decades.
“The show itself is 76 years long,” she said. “We’ve got a great group of volunteers. It’s a complex process to put together the show.”
Judging for Best in Show will be handled by Ann Roth, who was born and raised in Wilmington and is nationally recognized in the dog show circuit.
“She really steers all of us volunteers along the way,” Hayes said. “We’re very fortunate to have her here.”
