Hoggard sweeps titles at CCC cross country championship

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — One school walked away with all the hardware at the Carolina Coast Conference cross country championships at Long Leaf Park on Tuesday.
Hoggard started by taking the boys race with 26 points, followed by Topsail with 55.
Junior Riley Kiziah of the Vikings set a new course record with a time of 15:15.3. He was joined on the podium by Grayson Dill of the Pirates six seconds back and teammate Owen Reece.
“I’ve worked so hard for this and to win is awesome,” Kiziah said. “I honestly didn’t know I was going to win, even in the last home stretch, because I heard people chanting the second person’s name the whole time. I was really closing my eyes at the end and was able to get the victory. It means a lot.”
After that was even more dominance for the Hoggard girls, who took the team title with 27 points. Ashley finished second with 68.
Viking junior Amelia Medlin won gold with a time of 17:37.5. That was a whole 1:17.3 ahead of second place, who ended up being Molly Corcoran of Topsail. New Hanover’s Emma Rogers rounded out the top three.
“The team title definitely matters to me a lot more because I kind of expect more from myself. I expect myself to win, but I’m pulling for my team to win all the time.”
