WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The City of Wilmington’s annual street tree planting program will begin in November.

City of Wilmington Parks and Recreation say under a new contract Thorpe Landscaping will plant more than 600 trees in the community by the end of year.

The trees are planned to be planted in the public right-of-way in front of residential properties.

The mission is part of the city’s effort to replace aging and diseased street trees.

The city says recent removals of overmature Laurel Oaks have created opportunities for replanting. Also, a comprehensive stump grinding project has cleared the way for a new generation of trees.

The contract also includes an 18-month maintenance period following installation including regular watering and care.
