Carolina Beach residents voice concerns about Canal Drive during council meeting

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Some Carolina Beach residents expressed their concerns about the condition of a high-volume road during a town council meeting on Wednesday evening.

Last week, council member Joe Benson posted a video to his Facebook page, showing a small portion of the conditions of Canal Drive.

The two-lane road runs along the marina and is one of the only ways to get to the northern end of Carolina Beach.

Residents have complained for years about the state of the road, along with frequent flooding.

James Sanderford said the road needs to be improved.

“Its in very poor condition and it needs to be addressed,” Sanderford said. “And I think, my understanding, it’s been 4 decades since this road has been paved.”

Yves Tondeur did a study to see how uneven the road surface is along Canal Drive.

He said his conclusions were concerning.

“Driving on Canal Drive is ten times, one order of magnitude, worse than driving on a nicely repaved road like North Lake Park Blvd,’ Tondeur explained.

The town does not have any current plans in place to repave Canal Drive, but residents are hoping for a reconsideration during the council’s meeting in January.
