Brunswick County residents call for infrastructure improvements following 12,500 unit proposed development

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — Some Brunswick County residents are pushing back against continued development in the county, as a massive housing project awaits possible approval.

Back in August, Strategic Real Estate Partners LLC proposed the Maco Road Development, which would put more than 12,000 units on more than 4,000 acres of land located between Highway 87 and Town Creek Road.

The proposal also included plans for an elementary and middle school combo, a new high school, and several commercial areas.

During Monday’s Board of Commissioners meeting, several people, including Gary Ostby, said developments should not be the primary focus.

“If you end up building it first and then fix the infrastructure, that’s, that’s not the right approach. And what you end up doing is again is affecting people’s quality of life. It’s those local decisions that determine your quality of life, and that’s why I’m saying, residents need to be put first.”

The development has not been approved.

If it does get approved, construction would begin in 2027, lasting between 10 and 15 years.
