Pender County enhances flood monitoring with new gauges

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Pender County Emergency Management is improving the ability to monitor flooding across the county by adding five new flood gauges.
Pender County Emergency Management and the public are now able to see when and where flooding is occurring and when the water will crest in the different areas of the county.
“We will assist in real time monitoring of the rivers, streams and sound levels year around from anywhere,” said Tommy Batson, Pender County Emergency Management Director. “Pender County has eleven sites in the county after the new gauges came online this week.”
The first gauge was put on NC Highway 53 at the N.E. Cape Fear River Bridge before Hurricane Floyd in 1999. This was the first historic river flooding in the county with river gauge data.
According to a press release, one of the gauges was purchased by NCDOT and the others were bought by Pender County Emergency Management.
