WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — WWAY is proud to announce a new project that will greater recognize the success and accomplishments of athletes and teams in the area.

Introducing: “The WWAY Vinedresser Cup.”

Schools will earn points throughout the school year based on their achievements in the fall, winter and spring seasons for major team sports.

The seven schools participating are those within the Carolina Coast Conference. Those being Ashley, Hoggard, Laney, New Hanover, North Brunswick, Topsail and West Brunswick.

A total of eight sports will be factored into the overall standings. Fall sports include football, volleyball and boys soccer. Winter sports will include boys basketball and girls basketball. Spring sports will include baseball, softball and girls soccer. The fall 2025 seasons will count towards the results. Different genders for basketball and soccer are considered different sports.

Points will be awarded based on a school’s record in conference games at the end of the regular season. Overall records are not considered. The Carolina Coast champion in each sport will receive seven points while 7th place will receive one point, etc. Conference tournament results will not be factored in.

In the event of a tie for any placement of the conference standings, no tiebreakers will be used. Should a tie occur, those schools will receive the same amount of points while the school immediately behind them will be considered two places back.

Teams can also receive bonus points for success in the NCHSAA playoffs of each sport. Winning a playoff game or series will earn a school one bonus point. This applies to rounds up to and including the state semifinals. Schools will not receive a bonus point for earning a first-round bye.

Ultimately, schools will earn five bonus points for winning a state championship.

The more schools win and are consistent at it throughout the year, the more points they will receive.

As the fall sports season has concluded in the Carolina Coast Conference, here is a look at the final standings for boys soccer.

WWAY is still preparing its webpage that will contain all the conference standings, which will be updated regularly. That webpage can be found by clicking here, where a special promotional video can be seen detailing the competition. Updated standings will also be provided on air weekly for every sport that is in season.

WWAY encourages all the schools and their communities to participate by seeing where they stand in each sport on a regular basis.

The winning school will be determined after the spring season has concluded. The school with the most points will receive a trophy as the winner of “The WWAY Vinedresser Cup.”
