Burgaw man sentenced for deadly hit-and-run crash in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Burgaw man pleaded guilty in court on Tuesday to felony hit run causing death, DWI, and felony death by motor vehicle.

David Neely, 68, was sentenced to serve about 7-9 years (84-113 months) followed by about 2-3 years (21-38 months) in the department of adult corrections.

Court documents say due to the plea arrangement, the state will dismiss the second-degree murder charge.

The court also recommended Neely get psychiatric and/or psychological counseling as well as substance abuse treatment.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, units responded to the 5100 block of Wrightsville Avenue for a vehicle vs. e-bike collision that happened in April just after 12:15 a.m.

The bicyclist, John Williams, 57, was transported to the hospital by EMS with serious injuries and died the next day.
