Man facing several drug and gun charges after found slumped over wheel, police say

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say a man is facing several drug charges after being found slumped over the wheel in a vehicle.

WPD responded to the 2200 block of Wrightsville Avenue after a report of a driver slumped over the wheel still pressing the gas.

The Wilmington Fire Department was already on the scene when WPD arrived and removed the driver from the vehicle.

Officers found 47-year-old Daniel Hewett with drug paraphernalia in his hand.

After searching his vehicle, more than 60 grams of methamphetamine, just over 65 grams of cocaine, more than 160 bindles of fentanyl, marijuana, a stolen gun, and parts uses to assemble a gun suppressor were found.

Hewett is charged with driving while impaired, carrying a concealed weapon, possession and trafficking of methamphetamine, possession and trafficking of cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver fentanyl, simple possession of marijuana, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

Hewett was transferred to Novant Health NHRMC for treatment and will be transferred to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility once he is medically cleared.

WPD says this is an ongoing investigation.
