CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The local Cape Fear Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation postponed their 12th annual dune restoration Christmas tree recycling event due to a winter storm.

The event was originally scheduled for Saturday but with a winter storm threatening the Cape Fear the event has been moved.

Anyone who wants to attend can go to the Periwinkle Public Beach Access in Carolina Beach on Saturday, February 14 at 10:30 in the morning.

The project helps strengthen dunes along the coast. Christmas trees that would end up in a landfill are collected and placed strategically in dune systems.

“Dunes play a huge role in keeping our coastline healthy,” says Jessica Clark, Chair of the Cape Fear Surfrider Foundation Chapter. “Each year, we collaborate with the town of Carolina Beach to identify which areas need a little extra support to rebuild. Alongside Carolina Beach’s Beach Nourishment Project happening now, we will be able to assist in giving a long stretch of the beach a fresh start moving forward.”
