Local Shops Get Ready to Make Valentine’s Day Special
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As the flowers bloom, so does the spirit of love. Valentine’s Day is this weekend.
Orders are flowing in to local businesses. Whether it’s a floral arrangement, or something sweet, the holiday weekend provides a good opportunity for businesses in the winter season.
Sweet Nectar Florist, located in Leland, is gearing up for the holiday. The shop sells both synthetic and fresh flower arrangements. A lot of their flowers come from Columbia, and are shipped to the ILM Airport.
Floral Designer Roxanne Thompson says Roses are her favorite flower, and are also amongst the most popular in the store.
“At this time of year, most of the men that come in want fresh flowers, and that’s what their wives want too… We do a lot of roses and we do a lot of arrangements.”
Flowers are more expensive this year than years past. Tariffs have driven up the cost of imported flowers. A bouquet of a dozen roses costs almost 130 dollars, and the upgraded version is nearly 200 dollars.
If flowers aren’t for you, there’s always a sweet treat.
Whether it’s chocolate eggs, or Valentine’s Day themed cookies, Carolina Candy Company has a broad selection.
However, neither one of those aforementioned items is the shops best seller. Kimberly Smith, the stores owner says, chocolate covered strawberries take the cake.
“Our most popular order is our chocolate dipped strawberries. We sell them by the dozen. We dip over a thousand for the weekend of Valentines.”
Other good gift options include scented candles, or bars of soap.
