Bruns. Co. Schools expands virtual academy to homeschoolers, private school students

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY-TV) – The Brunswick County Schools Board green lit a request on Tuesday to expand its virtual academy opening it up to homeschool and private school students in the district.

The board voted unanimously to expand the “Brunswick Virtual Academy.” The academy previously only served students in grades six through 12 who have long term-illnesses or are at risk of dropping out.

The academy will now serve students in kindergarten through 12th grade who are not currently enrolled in the district.

The are currently more than 1700 homeschooled students in Brunswick County. Assistant Superintendent Johnathan Paschal said the expanded program will offer Brunswick County citizens a new choice for schooling.

“We want to partner with parents, I think the same thing holds true to families in our area that parents and right now they just not choosing Brunswick County Schools it does not mean that they might not in the future,” Paschal said.

Phase one of the expansion will utilize a digital curriculum that is taught by teachers licensed across North Carolina. Paschal said by phase two and three of the expansion they hope to involve more teachers within the district to teach these classes.

They virtual academy will also allow enrolled students to participate in sports and extracurriculars in the district.
