Orton conducts prescribed controlled burn to improve forest health

BRUNSWICK, NC (WWAY) –Orton Plantation is conducting a permitted prescribed burn across 559 acres today as part of its ongoing forest management plan to improve ecosystem health and restore longleaf pine habitat.
Longleaf pine depends on fire to thrive, as seedlings can remain in a “grass stage” for years without regular burns to reduce competing vegetation. Fire crews prioritize safety by establishing firebreaks, such as roads and fire lines, and using water resources to maintain control.
The burn, scheduled from 11 a.m. to approximately 6 p.m., follows strict weather and safety guidelines under an approved plan. Experienced local fire and safety professionals are on site throughout the operation.
Orton’s annual prescribed burns contribute to a broader regional effort to strengthen and preserve longleaf pine ecosystems, supported by conservationist Louis Bacon. Public access to the property is restricted during the burn for safety reasons.
