SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Duke Energy and local emergency management officials will test outdoor warning sirens surrounding the Brunswick Nuclear Plant between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1.

The test is part of routine maintenance to ensure the system is functioning properly. Sirens will sound for five to 30 seconds, and no action is required from the public. Some sirens may be tested more than once, and additional follow-up testing could occur after 11 a.m.

Because this is a scheduled test, local radio and television stations will not interrupt programming with Emergency Alert System messages. In the event of a real emergency, broadcasts would provide further instructions to the public.

Duke Energy maintains 38 sirens within a 10-mile radius of the Brunswick Nuclear Plant. The testing is conducted in coordination with emergency management officials in Brunswick and New Hanover counties, who are responsible for activating the sirens.
