Duke Energy, Piedmont highlight 811 safety during digging season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WWAY) — Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas are urging residents to call 811 before starting any digging projects as part of National Safe Digging Month in April.
The companies said calling 811 before digging helps prevent damage to underground utility lines and reduces the risk of injury.
“Underground utility lines can be present even just a few inches below the surface,” said Emily Henson, senior vice president and president of Duke Energy’s natural gas business. “Many digging and excavation incidents are preventable. A quick call to 811 can help you avoid costly, potentially dangerous damages.”
The national “Call Before You Dig” system allows homeowners, contractors and businesses to request that underground utility lines be marked before excavation begins. Officials recommend contacting 811 at least three business days prior to starting a project so crews can mark lines for services such as electricity, natural gas, water, sewer and telecommunications.
According to Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas, nearly 9,800 incidents involving damage to underground electric and natural gas lines were reported across their service areas in 2025.
The companies reported more than 3,100 damages to natural gas lines in the Carolinas, Tennessee, Ohio and Kentucky, and more than 6,600 damages to underground electric lines across Duke Energy’s service territories.
Company officials said calling 811 is free and is intended to help reduce service disruptions and improve public safety.
