Gas prices continue to rise ahead of holiday weekend in Cape Fear region
SOUTHEASTERN N.C. (WWAY) — As many drivers in the Cape Fear region prepare to travel for the holiday weekend, gas prices are continuing to climb.
According to GasBuddy, the national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $4.07. In the Cape Fear region, the average price is slightly lower at $3.91 per gallon.
The increase comes as ongoing conflict involving Iran has contributed to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. Analysts estimate roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply moves through the strait, and disruptions there are tightening supply and pushing prices higher.
Matt McClain, an analyst with GasBuddy, said rising diesel costs are also beginning to affect grocery prices, particularly for perishable goods.
“They’re not as shelf stable as perhaps the middle parts of the grocery store and when you see those prices go up, you know that the fuel, the shipping is now being factored in at a higher price point,” McClain said.
McClain said drivers can take steps to reduce fuel costs by improving vehicle efficiency. He recommends avoiding speeding, maintaining proper tire pressure, replacing air filters and keeping up with regular oil changes to help conserve fuel.
