WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington City Council will consider a proposal Tuesday night to rename a local skate park in memory of professional skateboarder Alec Chambers, who died late last year.

Chambers, 32, died on December 30, 2025, from injuries he sustained after being struck by a vehicle near Satellite Bar & Lounge in the city’s South Front neighborhood. Authorities charged Michelle Masiello with second-degree murder, driving while impaired, and related offenses in connection with the incident.

The proposal would rename Greenfield Grind Skate Park to “The Alec Chambers Skate Park of Wilmington.” The effort follows a petition from Chambers’ family and friends that garnered more than 6,800 signatures.

Councilmember David Joyner voiced support for the change, saying it would honor Chambers’ legacy and provide comfort to those who knew him.

“I didn’t know Alec personally, but throughout this process we’ve learned about the kind of man he was: kind, selfless, talented, and taken too soon,” Joyner said.

The City Council is expected to vote on the proposal during its April 7 meeting. The city’s Naming Facilities Committee previously approved the measure unanimously and recommended it move forward to the full council.
