Derby Day Fundraiser with NFL star Alex Highsmith to honor Wilmington leaders
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Kentucky Derby-inspired fundraiser featuring Alex Highsmith will return to Wilmington this weekend, celebrating community leaders while raising money for local causes.
“The Signature,” now in its fifth year, will take place Saturday, April 11, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Smoke on the Water. The event benefits the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation and the Barbara Highsmith Reading Academy of Wilmington.
This year’s celebration will honor Bill Saffo and Hilda DeLeon with Appreciation and Community Excellence awards during a ceremony scheduled for the afternoon.
Organized by Highsmith Branding Group and DyHard Productions, the event is designed to bring the community together during North Carolina Azalea Festival weekend. Attendees are encouraged to embrace Derby fashion, with big hats, seersucker suits, and bow ties.
The event will feature live music, dancing, giveaways, a best-dressed contest, signature drinks, and a cigar lounge. VIP tickets include heavy hors d’oeuvres, and while advance tickets have sold out, additional tickets will be available at the door.
Organizers say proceeds will support community programs and initiatives aimed at helping those in need and inspiring youth leadership.
