Burgaw moves forward with upgrades

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Burgaw is moving ahead with several long-planned improvement projects this spring, including major infrastructure upgrades and downtown enhancements.

Some of the work is supported by state funding. In 2023, the North Carolina General Assembly allocated $10.6 million to improve the town’s water and sewer systems. The funding is aimed at increasing capacity and replacing outdated lines serving homes and businesses.

Downtown, plans call for the removal of power lines along Wright Street and Courthouse Avenue to create a more open appearance and make way for decorative lighting. The lines could be placed underground or rerouted as part of the project.

Town leaders also highlighted the recent westward expansion of the Osgood Canal walking trail, which is intended to improve pedestrian connectivity across Burgaw.

Burgaw Town Manager James Gantt said it is encouraging to see long-discussed projects moving forward.

“A lot of these projects, like I’ve said, have been in plan for a number of years, and to see them coming to fruition is now very, very important to us and showing the citizens that their tax dollars, that their funding is being used to better the town versus just sitting back and letting things happen,” said Gantt.

Town officials said more details and timelines for the projects will be released as work progresses.
