WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear River Watch is inviting community members to prepare for an upcoming public hearing with a practice session focused on PFAS contamination and community advocacy.

The free event will take place Monday, April 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the organization’s office, located at Cape Fear River Watch office.

The session will give attendees an opportunity to practice public comments and learn more about PFAS–often referred to as “forever chemicals”–which have been a major environmental concern in the Cape Fear region. Kemp Burdette will lead the discussion alongside members of the Cape Fear Sierra Club, providing an overview of PFAS, the implications of the proposed rule, and key information ahead of the official hearing.

Organizers say the event is designed to empower residents to confidently participate in the public comment process. Attendees will have access to fact sheets, talking points, and materials to create posters, as well as an opportunity to share personal experiences related to PFAS contamination. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Burdette is scheduled to speak on behalf of the Cape Fear River basin at the official hearing in Wilmington on Thursday, April 23. Community members are encouraged to attend that meeting and wear blue in a show of solidarity, creating what organizers describe as a “river of support” for the Cape Fear River.

Those interested in attending Monday’s practice session are encouraged to RSVP in advance.
