City of Wilmington to launch community engagement for new 25-acre public park

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The City of Wilmington is inviting residents to help shape the future of a new public park during a community engagement event scheduled for May 2.
The drop-in event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MLK Community Center and will give the public an opportunity to share ideas on the park’s design, amenities, and overall vision directly with project partners and design teams.
The initiative follows the City’s recent purchase of 25 acres of green space off Greenville Loop Road, acquired on March 16 with funding support from The Endowment and New Hanover County. Officials say the site is planned to be developed into a new public park within five years.
City leaders say the project aligns with the Comprehensive Parks, Recreation + Open Space Master Plan and is part of a broader effort to expand access to green space and strengthen connections across Wilmington’s park system.
The May 2 event will feature family-friendly activities, games, and food trucks. Design teams will present a summary of key themes and feedback gathered during the session.
In addition to in-person participation, a digital survey will launch the same day and remain open to allow broader community input.
