Multiple arrests made in Tabor City drug and firearm investigation

TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — A months-long narcotics investigation in Columbus County has led to multiple arrests and the seizure of drugs and firearms, according to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.
On April 14, authorities with the agency’s Special Operations Division Vice/Narcotics Unit, working alongside the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, executed a search warrant as part of an ongoing effort to combat illegal drug distribution and unlawful firearm possession in the Tabor City area.
The operation was supported by multiple specialized units, including the Heavy Enforcement Action Team (H.E.A.T.), SWAT, and the Criminal Investigations Division.
Investigators say the case began several months ago and involved extensive intelligence gathering, surveillance, and undercover work. Authorities identified individuals suspected of distributing narcotics throughout Tabor City, surrounding communities, and into parts of South Carolina.
During the search, law enforcement seized approximately one kilogram of crystal methamphetamine, 11 firearms, and additional controlled substances and evidence.
Three individuals were arrested in connection with the investigation:
- William Antwan Gaskins, of Tabor City, faces numerous charges, including multiple counts of trafficking methamphetamine and opium/heroin, possession with intent to sell and deliver various controlled substances, manufacturing methamphetamine, and several firearm-related offenses. He is being held at the Columbus County Detention Center under a $1.3 million secured bond.
- Douglas Wilson Branton, also of Tabor City, is charged with possession of fentanyl and cocaine, maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances, and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond is set at $50,000 secured.
- Terrance James Thomas, of Tabor City, is charged with felony littering of hazardous waste and resisting a public officer. His bond is set at $10,000 secured.
All three individuals are currently incarcerated at the Columbus County Detention Center.
Sheriff Bill Rogers praised the work of investigators involved in the case, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation.
“These arrests highlight the strength of interagency collaboration and demonstrate how the effective use of shared resources leads to safer communities and successful outcomes,” Rogers said.
The sheriff’s office is encouraging residents to report suspicious or criminal activity. Officials also emphasized that all individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
