WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A community 5K run and walk aimed at raising awareness and support for Parkinson’s disease will take place Saturday, May 9 at The Pointe at Barclay.

The event is being organized by Beat Parkinson’s Today, a nonprofit that provides specialized exercise classes for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease across the East Coast, including Wilmington. Officials say the organization’s programs are offered at no cost to participants thanks in part to support from partners like Novant Health.

The 5K event is also supported by local sponsor Brunches and comes as part of Parkinson’s Awareness Month programming designed to increase understanding and support for those affected by the disease.

Organizers say the goal of the run/walk is to bring the community together while highlighting the importance of exercise-based therapy and accessible wellness programs for individuals living with Parkinson’s.
