Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation shares energy saving tips with customers

BRUKSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — We’re about two months away from the start of Summer, but daytime temperatures are already starting to climb.

Whether you live in a house or apartment, your electric use will likely raise as well if you rely on air conditioning to cool your home.

Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation customers have received texts, suggesting how to “Beat the Peak” by reminding users to conserve energy.

The utility sends these alerts out when energy usage spikes.

Brookes Versaggi is a spokesman for BEMC. He says one easy step you can take is change the type of thermostat in your home.

“Think about air conditioning. That is usually the biggest use of electricity. If you can adjust your thermostat just a few degrees, that is going to save you a lot of money on your bill. Same with large appliances. Washers. Dryers. Dishwashers. If you can delay the use of peak periods, that is going to help save money.”

BEMC says their monthly cost can be lowered by $100,000 if just one thousand of its members take simple steps to conserve electricity.

Versaggi gave the examples of doing laundry and dishes before or after peak periods, turning off light and electronics, and using a grill or microwave instead of the oven or stove when cooking.
