County proclaims May 3–9 as National Travel and Tourism Week

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County commissioners have unanimously approved a proclamation designating May 3–9, 2026, as National Travel and Tourism Week in New Hanover County, recognizing the industry’s major impact on the local economy and community.
The proclamation, approved during the April 20 meeting, aligns New Hanover County with a nationwide celebration established by Congress in 1983 to highlight the importance of travel in strengthening economies and supporting local communities. This year’s theme, “Postmarked: Essential,” emphasizes travel’s role as a foundational driver of growth and cultural connection.
The county’s tourism sector will mark the observance on Wednesday, May 6, when the Wilmington and Beaches Convention and Visitors Bureau hosts its annual Travel Rally Breakfast and Celebration.
The event will include a State of the Industry update and a keynote address from Heather Hansen O’Neill, a TEDx speaker and corporate coach known for her work on leadership and performance. The program will also conclude with the presentation of the Tourism Star and Legacy Awards.
“Each year during National Travel and Tourism Week, the CVB staff looks forward to celebrating and saluting the more than 7,003 tourism and hospitality industry employees who welcomed an estimated 4.8 million visitors to our destination last year,” said Kim Hufham, president and CEO of the New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority.
The tourism industry remains a key economic engine for New Hanover County, supporting thousands of jobs and contributing significantly to the region’s visitor economy.
