NC 4th of July Festival launches “Dog Marshal” contest to support annual celebration

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — A new fundraiser tied to one of the region’s most beloved Independence Day traditions is giving local dogs a chance to take center stage this summer.
Organizers of the NC 4th of July Festival have announced an online photo contest that will award one standout pup the title of “Dog Marshal” in the festival’s July 4th parade.
The contest opens Friday, May 8, at 6 a.m. and runs through June 21 at 6 p.m., offering pet owners an opportunity to showcase their dogs while supporting the nonprofit festival.
“It’s a great opportunity for people to spotlight the joy, loyalty and personality their dog brings to their lives and their community while supporting a cherished local week-long festival,” said organizer Mimi Vargo.
Participants can enter by submitting a photo and short story about their dog’s favorite summertime moments for a $5 entry fee. Community members can then vote for their favorite entries at $1 per vote, with proceeds benefiting the festival’s programming.
The dog receiving the most votes will be named “Dog Marshal” and invited to ride in the July 4 parade alongside their owner. While participation in the parade is optional, the winner and runners-up will also receive additional prizes.
Festival organizers say this is the first time the event has incorporated a canine-focused fundraiser, adding a new element of community engagement to the celebration.
The annual festival, which commemorates Independence Day, is expected to draw more than 65,000 visitors to the Southport area. This year’s event will also mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, featuring a mix of traditional favorites and new activities throughout the week.
More information about the contest and festival events can be found on the festival’s official website.
