Driver arrested after chase ends in crash along Highway 17

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A car crashed Sunday evening in Brunswick County after driving off following an attempted traffic stop.

According to Leland Police Lieutenant Jonathan Hall, an officer tried to pull over a car along Highway 17 when the driver drove off into the nearby Publix construction site.

The officer did not follow the driver, but shortly afterwards, saw the same car drive back onto 17 from Brunswick Forest, where the officer again tried to pull them over.

The car drove off again, after which a Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputy took over the chase.

The car then crashed into the wire fencing near where Highway 17 meets with US 87, and the driver was taken into custody.

WWAY has reached out to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s office for more information regarding any possible charges, but has not heard back at this time.
