SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The City of Southport is preparing to begin a new sidewalk installation project aimed at improving pedestrian safety and connectivity throughout the city.

Contractors are scheduled to begin work Monday, Nov. 9, with construction expected to take several weeks.

The project will include new sidewalks, pedestrian pathways and replacements of existing sidewalk sections in several areas.

According to city officials, the following streets and locations will be impacted:

  • North Rhett Street: New sidewalk installation.
  • East Brown Street: Sidewalk installation will include a connection to Lowe-White Park.
  • East West Street: A pedestrian pathway will be installed alongside the City Gym, around the basketball court and into the Franklin Square parking lot.
  • North Caswell Avenue: New sidewalks will be installed between West St. George Street and West Owens Street, improving pedestrian access to Caviness Park.
  • Downtown Southport: Several locations will receive sidewalk section replacements.

During construction, residents and visitors may experience temporary disruptions to pedestrian access and areas surrounding the work.

The city’s Public Works Department plans to contact property owners who will be directly affected by the project next week.

City officials are asking for patience and cooperation as crews work to improve pedestrian safety and create better connections between neighborhoods, parks and other destinations throughout Southport.

The project is expected to take several weeks to complete, although an exact completion date has not been announced.
