Cape Fear Community College lawsuit settled by insurance carrier

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College has been notified that a lawsuit filed against its Board of Trustees has been settled for $265,000 through the college’s insurance carrier.
According to a statement released May 4, the lawsuit was filed by Ray Funderburk on June 2, 2023, after he was removed from the Board of Trustees during a special meeting on March 8, 2023.
The college said its insurance provider determined that Funderburk had accumulated $265,000 in legal fees and that both parties agreed to settle the case for that amount.
Officials emphasized that the settlement was handled by the insurance carrier as a means of resolving the matter efficiently and does not constitute any admission of liability by the Board of Trustees or the college.
No additional details about the terms of the settlement were released.
