CURRIE, NC (WWAY) — A new travel experience designed to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary is encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore the rich history and unique attractions of southeastern North Carolina.

The First in Freedom Festival, in partnership with the Moores Creek Battleground Association, has launched the Roadmap to Freedom Passport, a regional tourism initiative featuring more than 40 destinations across eight counties.

The passport booklet includes stops at attractions such as the Wilmington Railroad Museum, Missiles and More Museum, North Carolina Maritime Museum, Duplin County Veterans Museum and Flying Machine Brewing Co.. Participating sites span Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender and Sampson counties.

“The passport, which is valid through Dec. 31, offers day-trip adventures to the region’s hidden gems,” said Jim Buell, president of the Moores Creek Battleground Association. “Each destination highlights a piece of America’s 250th anniversary.”

Modeled after a traditional travel passport, the booklet allows participants to collect stamps and signatures at each destination they visit. Visitors who complete most or all of the sites can return their passport to the Moores Creek National Battlefield to become eligible for year-end prizes, including America 250 commemorative items based on the number of locations visited.

Officials say the program has already attracted enthusiastic participants eager to explore local history and culture.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate the first participant to complete the First in Freedom Festival Passport Program,” said Jason Collins, chief of interpretation, education and volunteers at Moores Creek National Battlefield. “This couple traveled to more than 40 sites in southeastern North Carolina and explored more than 250 years of American history represented at these locations.”

The Roadmap to Freedom Passport launched during the First in Freedom Festival kickoff event in February. Buell said the program offers locals a chance to experience the region from a fresh perspective.

“I have a First in Freedom Passport, and it has been an enjoyable experience to be a tourist in our own backyard,” Buell said.

Passports are available at participating destinations, Moores Creek National Battlefield, the Greater Topsail Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism and members of the Wilmington Area Hospitality Association.
