SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Firefighters from across the region will gather in Southport later next month for the 41st annual Firefighter’s Freedom Competition, a longtime tradition that combines firefighting skills demonstrations with family-friendly fun.

Hosted by the Southport Fire Department, the event will take place Saturday, June 27, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Southport Fire Substation.

The annual competition has been a part of the community since 1984 and features teams from area fire departments competing in challenges designed to showcase teamwork, endurance and traditional firefighting techniques.

“What looks like fun games to the spectators is really an event to test the teamwork of a department, as it pays homage to the training and firefighting methods of our past,” Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew said in a statement.

Among the featured events are the Tanker Tug, Bucket Brigade, Command Post challenge, Firefighter Relay Challenge, Barrel Push and a pie-eating contest. Demonstrations throughout the afternoon will include fire extinguishing techniques, vehicle extrication and displays of fire engines, ladder trucks and emergency response equipment.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees can tour fire apparatus, meet firefighters, visit vendors and enjoy water activities and children’s attractions.

The competition is one of many events tied to the annual North Carolina Fourth of July Festival.

More information and a full festival schedule are available at NC Fourth of July Festival.
