Qualified Captain Warns Boaters After Yacht Gets Stuck on Rocks

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) With boat traffic expected to pick up along the coast this holiday weekend, local boating safety instructor and social media personality Chris Juall is sharing another cautionary tale from the water.

Juall, known online as “The Qualified Captain,” recently broke down a viral boating mishap involving a husband and wife whose yacht ended up stranded on the rocks after running aground in a tidal area.

“What you’re seeing here is a beautiful yacht,” Juall said while reviewing the video. “But if you look closely, it’s not floating — it’s high and dry on the rocks.”

According to Juall, the couple apparently ran aground as the tide was rapidly falling in an area with an 8-to-10-foot tide swing.

“They ran aground, they hit the rocks,” Juall explained. “Next thing you know, a situation that’s pretty bad becomes borderline catastrophic.”

Once the tide went out, the couple had to wait several hours before help could safely reach them.

“Now you’ve got to wait six hours for the tide to come back in,” Juall said. “That gives an opportunity for a rescue to come and at least get a chance to get you off the rocks.”

Juall said towing crews were eventually able to pull the vessel free, while crews also had to monitor for possible hull damage or leaks caused by the impact with the rocks.

Despite the dramatic scene, Juall said the outcome could have been far worse.

“Believe it or not, when everything was said and done, these people were actually rescued totally unharmed, and there was very minimal damage to the boat,” he said. “At the end of the day, it was a happy ending.”

Juall also shared several reminders for boaters heading out this weekend, including understanding navigational charts, knowing channel markers, checking equipment before leaving the dock, and being aware of tides, currents, and bottom conditions.

“Know where you are on the map. Know where you are on the chart,” Juall said. “Know the environment. What kind of currents do you experience in an area? What about the tide? What about the bottom? Is it sand, or is it rock? This all matters.”

Juall ended his segment with one final reminder to boaters:

“You don’t want to end up on the Qualified Captain page.”
