LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A new rollover warning sign has been installed along a westbound entrance ramp connecting U.S. 17 to U.S. 74 in Leland following a school activity bus crash earlier this month.
The crash involved a Cumberland County Schools activity bus carrying more than two dozen student-athletes and adults from the Douglas Byrd High School football team. The bus overturned while traveling on the ramp, sending four people to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver, 57-year-old Annette Blount, was later charged with reckless driving with wanton disregard and exceeding a safe speed, according to officials.
A spokesperson with the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said a new rollover warning sign was installed after the crash to alert drivers traveling through the area.
Officials said additional signs at the location were replacement signs that had been damaged during the crash.
The new warning is intended to help drivers navigate the ramp safely and reduce the risk of future rollover incidents.
