Large alligator reported in Southport neighborhood; authorities monitoring area

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — A large alligator spotted in a residential neighborhood in Southport prompted a response from local authorities Monday morning.

According to the Southport Police Department, officers responded to multiple calls reporting the alligator along Stuart Avenue, where it was seen moving in and out of residential yards.

The Southport Police Department said the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has been notified and officers will remain on scene while awaiting a response.

Authorities are asking residents and motorists to avoid the area and allow officials to manage the situation safely. No injuries or other incidents have been reported.
