New NCDMV tool lets customers upload insurance and residency documents from phones

(WWAY) — North Carolina drivers can now upload proof of insurance and residency documents directly from their phones while visiting a driver license office, eliminating the need to leave and return with printed copies.
The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles recently launched a new in-office document upload tool that allows customers to securely share required documents while completing transactions at the counter.
The tool was initially created to address one of the most commonly forgotten documents, proof of insurance. NCDMV officials later expanded the feature to accept additional documents, including phone bills, bank statements, leases, utility bills and other proof of residency records.
According to the NCDMV, customers uploaded more than 6,000 documents using the tool during its first two weeks of operation.
“Within the first two weeks, customers have already uploaded more than 6,000 documents using the new tool,” NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine said. “This early success shows that North Carolinians are ready for a more convenient, modern DMV experience. We’re especially proud that our frontline teams saw the potential and moved quickly to expand the tool, helping even more customers stay in line and complete their transactions without delay.”
Many customers already store important documents on their phones. The new system allows them to upload eligible documents without needing to find a printer or reschedule an appointment.
Customers must still bring original identity documents, such as passports, Social Security cards and birth certificates, because federal law requires DMV staff to examine those documents in person.
Paper copies of proof of insurance and residency documents will continue to be accepted.
“This new feature is one more step in our work to reduce wait times, prevent repeat visits, and deliver better service to the people of North Carolina,” Tine said.
The document upload tool is now available at all North Carolina driver license offices.
