Visible flare, natural gas odors possible during Southport utility work

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Residents and businesses near East Moore Street in Southport may notice loud noises, visible flames and the smell of natural gas as Piedmont Natural Gas performs routine infrastructure maintenance beginning this week.
The maintenance is scheduled to take place from June 3 through June 12 near 1600 East Moore St., barring any weather delays.
According to Piedmont Natural Gas, the work will include the use of a flare stack, a large vertical pipe used to safely burn off natural gas during maintenance operations. The process could produce a tall flame visible to nearby neighborhoods and businesses.
People in the area also may hear a whistling sound or notice the odor of natural gas while the work is underway.
Utility officials said the maintenance is planned and poses no threat to the public. The company is notifying residents in advance to prevent unnecessary concern and avoid calls to emergency services.
The work is part of routine infrastructure maintenance designed to support the natural gas system.
Piedmont Natural Gas said the schedule could change if weather conditions affect operations.
